Why the key?

Inspired by Dalí’s robust glossary of personal symbols, the key motif was selected to represent the exposition of Dalí’s inner workings and all that students will find inside the Art Mobile. Drawing from Freud and The Interpretation of Dreams (1899), Dalí’s use of keys in his artwork is meant to signify the subconscious and what is revealed when we look inside the mind. In the Art Mobile, students discover how Dalí intentionally crafted his distinctive persona through storytelling and personal symbols—highlighting aspects of his life, as well as the scientific and historical ideas that fascinated him. By examining how these elements of his personality appear in his artwork, students are invited to unlock both the individual and collective dimensions of who they are.

With Gratitude
