The Dalí Museum Announces First-Ever Murals Exhibition

May 21, 2025

Celebrating 10 Years of SHINE, the Exhibit Invites Renowned Street Artists to Paint in the Museum Gallery

The Dalí Museum presents a first-of-its-kind exhibition, Outside In: New Murals Inspired by Dalí, featuring artists painting directly on the gallery walls. Opening May 24, 2025, the installation bridges the vision of Salvador Dalí with the energy of contemporary street art, showcasing original large-scale murals by celebrated participants in St. Petersburg’s internationally recognized SHINE Mural Festival.

Since 1982, The Dalí has been a cornerstone of St. Petersburg’s creative pulse, fueling imagination and innovation. SHINE draws from that same energy, transforming the city’s public spaces into an open-air gallery. In celebration of its 10-year anniversary, The Dalí has commissioned artists from near and far to create new works inside the Museum inspired by Dalí, his art and the Museum’s iconic architecture.

“Museums aim to be porous—what is out in the world must find its way into a museum,” said Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director of The Dalí Museum. “With the exhibition Outside In, we bring the immediacy and ambitious size of street murals into the gallery to be examined in a new way—within the controlled atmosphere and sense of anticipation that only a museum setting can provide.”

Each artist, many of whom have a personal connection to Dalí’s work, brings a distinct visual language to their interpretation of Dalí’s surrealist legacy. Their custom works carry the energy of the streets into the heart of the institution and demonstrate the varied and lasting impact of Salvador Dalí.

“Murals are more than just decoration—they are statements, stories and expressions of public imagination,” said Allison McCarthy, Associate Curator at The Dalí Museum and curator of the special exhibit. “By featuring them together in this unique setting, we extend their cultural impact and reaffirm their role as powerful tools for community connection, especially within the vibrant community of St. Petersburg.”

Participating artists include SHINE Founders BASK, Chad Mize, Palehorse and Tes One; Florida-based artists Miss Crit, Naomi Haverland and Nicole Salgar; national artists Bakpak Durden, Greg Mike and Lauren YS; and international artists Fintan Magee from Australia, Marina Capdevila from Dalí’s homeland of Spain and SHOK-1 from England.

In conjunction with the exhibit, visitors can explore interactive experiences including YOUR PORTRAIT, which educates users on the methods and styles of street art while transforming a selfie into a digital mural, and the Museum’s AI-powered Dream Tapestry, which turns a written dream into a one-of-a-kind image in the genre of street art.

The exhibition will be on view through Oct. 26, 2025, and will have a variety of associated programs including tours, workshops, lectures and more exploring the intersection of murals and Surrealism, found at TheDali.org/events.

Supporting sponsors for Outside In: New Murals Inspired by Dalí are Hal Freedman and Willi Rudowsky, and Joanne Obenauf.
