“Seated on a dry-rock wall, Gala ate black grapes. It was as if she were growing brighter and more beautiful with each new grape. And with each new silence-rounded afternoon of our idyll, I felt Gala sweeten in unison with the grapes on the vines.” — Salvador Dalí, 1942

This special presentation of 35 original drawings and collages made by Salvador Dalí for his book Les Vins de Gala (The Wines of Gala), is on view in The Dalí Museum’s James Family Wing. Published by Draeger in 1977, this luxurious encyclopedia celebrated the artist’s wife, Gala, sorting wines according to the emotions they evoke—joy, indulgence or even impossibility.

Transforming found imagery from some of his favorite artists, including Bouguereau, Millet and Meissonier, Dalí explored wine in all its facets, from vineyard to production and uncorking, creating a surreal atlas as theatrical as it was intimate.

All works on loan from a Private Collection, courtesy of Di Donna Galleries.
