This special presentation of nine prints from Salvador Dalí’s enigmatic tarot card series is on view in The Dalí Museum’s James Family Wing. Created over more than a decade and published in Spain in 1984, the deck represents one of the most ambitious and complex projects of Dalí’s late career.
Filled with references to the history of art, the occult and Dalí’s personal iconography, the cards reimagine traditional tarot archetypes through a surrealist lens. Dalí portrayed himself as “The Magician,” inspired by his fascination with the legendary Hermes Trismegistus, while Gala appears as “The Empress,” adapted from his painting Saint Helena of Port Lligat (1956).
Drawn from the Museum’s collection, this presentation offers a rare opportunity to view selections from the deck together and marks an important step in understanding how these works function both individually and as part of a larger artistic vision.
