This one-week program offered to children ages 9-14 encourages students to express their own ideas about Dali’s art, while sharing knowledge gained about Dali on a tour for their families and for the public. Students build a foundation in art by learning how to look at and talk about art through the Dali collection.
Students create their own art, explore Dali’s techniques, interpret his works in the Museum, and become familiar with Dali’s life and interests. They participate in fun, surreal-inspired activities; and they make new friends. The program concludes with a Friday afternoon tour and reception for their families. Ultimately, the Dali Junior Docent Program benefits students by building self-esteem, enhancing their speaking skills, providing opportunities to verbalize personal choices, and bringing families into the museum to share in the students’ accomplishments.
A 7-year long collaboration with the USFSP Department of Psychiatry documented how the Junior Docent Art Program assists in the development of children’s self-esteem and ability to learn. “This study provides preliminary evidence that art programs can be beneficial for the self-concept of children and draws implications for arts education and art therapy programming for diverse needs.” The article, written by Ryan Kaufman and Eric Rinehardt, was published in Volume 31, Issue 3 (September 2014) of the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association. “The Effects of a Museum Art Program on the Self-Concept of Children”
