The Dali Celebrates Pride - Film Screening: Little Ashes
June 20, 2013 (Thursday)
A fictionalized account of Dali's early life, "Little Ashes" is a contemporary story about universal themes such as love and relationships, longing, loss and betrayal. The three main characters are important Spanish figures - Salvador Dali, poet Federico Garcia Lorca and filmmaker Luis Bunuel - who met as students at the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. Dali, Lorca and Bunuel defied their society's politics and forged new ground during a time when being an artist was revolutionary - and being a gay or bisexual artist was dangerous. Together, these distinct personalities learn from each other and develop a complex new language about the nature of art. (2008, 112 minutes, directed by Paul Morrison and starring Robert Pattinson)
Cost: Event takes place in Raymond James Community room with overflow in the theater (no food or drinks permitted in the theater).
Beer + wine cash bar.

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Viridiana
July 6, 2013 (Saturday)
Banned in Spain and denounced by the Vatican, Luis Bunuel's hilarious vision of life as a beggar's banquet is regarded by many as his masterpiece. In it, the young novice Viridiana does her utmost to maintain her Catholic principles, but her lecherous uncle and a motley assemblage of paupers force her to confront the limits of her idealism. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival, this anticlerical free-for-all is as shocking today as ever. -Amazon (Bunuel, 1962; 90 min; Spanish with English subtitles Not Rated)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Un Chien Andalou + Simon of the Desert
July 11, 2013 (Thursday)
Un Chien Andalou remains a startling artifact suggesting ways in which film can express the subconscious. The result of Luis Bunuel's collaboration with Salvador Dali, the 17-minute, 1929 film was designed expressly to shock and provoke. Opening with the canonical eyeball-slashing sequence and divided into baffling "chapters", this is a work of art obsessed with religion, lust, decay, violence, and death. Un Chien Andalou isn't simply one of the great works of the surrealist movement, but a segment of cinematic DNA that irrevocably altered the aesthetics of film. -Ryan Boudinot (Bunuel & Dali, 1929; 17 min; Not Rated)
Simon of the Desert is Luis Bunuel's wicked and wild take on the life of devoted ascetic Saint Simeon Stylites, who waited atop a pillar surrounded by a barren landscape for six years, six months, and six days, in order to prove his devotion to God. Yet the devil, in the figure of the beautiful Silvia Pinal, huddles below, trying to tempt him down. A skeptic's vision of human conviction, Bunuel's short and sweet satire is one of the master filmmaker's most renowned works of surrealism. -Amazon (Bunuel, 1965; 45 min; Spanish with English subtitles; Not Rated)

A group of bourgeois cosmopolitans are invited to a mansion for dinner and inexplicably find themselves unable to leave, in Luis Bunuel's daring masterpiece The Exterminating Angel. Made just one year after his international sensation Viridiana, this is a furthering of Bunuel's wicked takedown of the rituals and dependencies of the frivolous upper classes, full of eerie and hilarious absurdity. -Amazon (Bunuel, 1962; 94 min; Spanish with English subtitles; Not Rated)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Jamon, Jamon
July 27, 2013 (Saturday)
Class, sex, and food are the obsessions of this Spanish comedy drama, an international hit from writer and director J.J. Bigas Luna that plays like a cross between the lusty Like Water for Chocolate (1992) and the early work of Pedro Almodovar. In a small town in Spain's arid Monegros region, young underwear factory executive Jose Luis (Jordi Molla) falls in love with the beautiful Silvia (Penelope Cruz), a worker on the shop floor. When Silvia becomes pregnant, Jose Luis wants to marry her, but his mother Conchita (Stefania Sandrelli), the factory owner, is appalled by the thought of her son marrying a working-class girl, especially one who is the daughter of a prostitute, Carmen (Anna Galiena). So Conchita hatches a scheme to woo Silvia away from her son by hiring handsome model Raul (Javier Bardem) to seduce the girl. Jamon Jamon was the winner of a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. -Moviefone (Luna, 1992; 96 min; Spanish with English subtitles; Not Rated)

Film Screening: The Way of Saint James
July 27, 2013 (Saturday)
Over the lovely "Camino de Santiago", the Way of St. James, which is the ancient route leading from the Pyrenees to the famous and ancient shrine of Santiago de Compostela, this documentary follows the journey of several pilgrims who differ in culture and religious faith, united only by a mysterious attraction towards the same spiritual destination.
Across breathtaking landscapes, we experience a journey that is at once concrete, mystical and metaphorical in a continued alternation between past and present, between the history and legends that have fashioned the destiny of the Way of St. James. This ancient route that concludes at the shrine where St. James the Apostle is buried is the most famous Christian pilgrimage in the world. Now you can take this ancient journey through this beautifully produced film. -Amazon (2010, DVD, 105 min., NR)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Dali - Tragic-Comic Genius

Dali & Beyond Film Series: The Day the Earth Stood Still
August 3, 2013 (Saturday)
A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. -Robert Lane (Wise, 1951; 92 min; rated G)

Space alien (Bowie) crash lands on Earth, seeking help for his drought-stricken planet. By securing patents to advanced technology, he becomes a fabulously wealthy industrialist. However, money and its attendant decadence ultimately exert a stronger gravitational pull. Bowie seemed perfectly cast as the space traveler, and the film further cemented director Roeg's status as one of the most unique filmmakers of the 1970's. Originally cut by 20 minutes in its 1976 US release, this version presents the complete film. (Roeg, 1976; 139 min; rated R)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Moon
August 24, 2013 (Saturday)
Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the completion of his 3-year-long contract with Lunar Industries, mining Earth's primary source of energy on the dark side of the moon. Alone with only the base's vigilant computer Gerty (voiced by Oscar-Winner Kevin Spacey) as his sole companion, Bell's extended isolation has taken its toll. His only link to the outside world comes from satellite messages from his wife and young daughter. He longs to return home, but a terrible accident on the lunar surface leads to a disturbing discovery that contributes to his growing sense of paranoia and dislocation so many miles away from home. Moon is an engrossing, intelligent sci-fi thriller that ranks with genre classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey. -Amazon (Jones, 2009; 97 min; rated R)

Dali & Beyond Film Series: Trip to the Moon + Fantastic Planet
August 31, 2013 (Saturday)
"Trip to the Moon" is the most famous of the over 500 short films produced by cinema pioneer Georges Melies betwen 1896 and 1912, and its signature image of a bullet-shaped rocket lodging itself in the eye of a smirking moon is one of the most recognizable images in cinema history. An accomplished magician, Melies moved from simple recordings of his stage shows to dazzling fantasy epics which were among the first narrative films ever made. "Trip to the Moon" is composed of a series of tableaux, each featuring chaotic action and multiple camera tricks photographed with a stubbornly static camera, which work together to tell a simple story. As one of the earliest examples of cinematic fantasy, "A Trip to the Moon" paved the way for such filmic flights of fancy as The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars, as it proved that the seduction of the audience through special effects has roots deeper than the blockbusters of the Seventies. -Mark Pittillo (Melies, 1902; 17 min; Not rated)
"Fantastic Planet" tells the story of Oms, a human-like species, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called Draags. The story takes place on the Draags' planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood. He manages to escape enslavement from a Draag learning device used to educate the savage Oms - and begins to organise an Om revolt. The imagination invested in the surreal creatures, music and sound design, and eerie landscapes, is immense and unforgettable. -Amazon (Laloux, 1973; 72 min; Not Rated)
Cost: Free to all. Refreshments for sale in Cafe Gala (Refreshments not permitted in theater)

Film Screening: The Way
August 31, 2013 (Saturday)
"The Way" is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends, and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago,. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn't plan on is the profound impact the journey will have on him. From the unexpected and, oftentimes, amusing experiences along "The Way," Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again. Through his unresolved relationship with his son, he discovers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose." -Amazon (2011, DVD, 121 min., PG-13)
