Poetry at The Dalí is an ongoing series hosted by St. Petersburg Poet Laureate, Helen Wallace. Occurring on the second Thursday of each month through May 2019, each evening will feature Wallace joined by selected poets to present poems addressing the theme of “Things Are Not as They Seem.” Following the presentation, there will be an audience Q&A.

Cost: Free (Parking is free for members, as available; $10 parking for non-members; free after 5pm on Thursdays, as available.)

Helen Pruitt Wallace
Helen Pruitt Wallace serves as Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg. She received a Florida Book Award for Shimming the Glass House, her first collection of poems, which was chosen for the 2007 Richard Snyder Prize, and published by Ashland Poetry Press. A chapbook, Pink Streets, was published in 2016 by Yellow Jacket. Wallace’s individual poems have appeared in several journals and anthologies, and she served as co-editor of the anthology Isle of Flowers published by Anhinga Press. She’s received a McKay Shaw Academy of American Poets Award, The dA Center for the Arts Poetry Award, a residency fellowship from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and a Tennessee Williams Scholarship from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. After earning her Ph.D. in English/Creative Writing from Florida State University, Wallace was a professor of poetry and nonfiction at Eckerd College. She currently serves as a trustee for the Dalí Museum where she helps host the Dalí Poetry Series. 

 

 

Poets


Erin Hoover
Erin Hoover’s debut poetry collection, Barnburner, was selected by Kathryn Nuernberger for Elixir Press’s 2017 Antivenom Award. Her poems have appeared in The Best American Poetry, Best New Poets, and in journals such as Prairie Schooner, Narrative, Alaska Quarterly Review, and Pleiades. Hoover has served as past editor of the Southeast Review, volunteer for VIDA: Women in Literary Arts, and co-founder of the literary organization Late Night Library. She earned a Ph.D. from Florida State University and now lives in Tallahassee, where she teaches writing.

 

 

 

 

Walter “Wally B.” Jennings
Walter “Wally B.” Jennings is an ordained minister, published poet, and spoken word artist who performs and conducts workshops and mentorship sessions in the national spoken word community.  He graduated from Florida A&M University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Economics and serves as a Poet Artist in Residence for Hillsborough County Schools. The Founder and Executive Director of the “Heard ‘Em Say Youth Arts Collective” (www.heardemsay.org), he also founded “Black on Black Rhyme-Tampa” and co-hosts  “Poetry Is…”: an interactive radio broadcast on 88.5 FM and www.wmnf.org. In 2011, Wally B was honored by the Creative Loafing Best of Bay publication as the area’s “Best Spoken Word Artist.”
