These questions have never felt more urgent. From the studio to the stage\, to the museum wall\, the history of art is also a history of community—its values and its tolerance for provocation and dissidence.Join us for a panel discussion exploring the evolving relationship between artists\, institutions and the communities they shape. \n\n\n\nLocation: The Dalí Museum’s Will Raymund Theater (registration required).  \n\n\n\nThis event is free with limited capacity. An event ticket is required for entry.Gallery access is not included. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Hank Hine serves as Executive Director of The Dalí Museum and has led the institution since 2002\, guiding the development of its current building and expanded campus. Under his leadership\, the Museum has strengthened its international reputation while deepening its role as a center for creative exploration. He holds an undergraduate degree from Stanford University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Brown University. Prior to joining The Dalí\, Hine served as director of GraphicStudio at the University of South Florida and founded Hine Editions/Limestone Press\, a San Francisco publishing house specializing in artist books and museum catalogs. A writer and educator\, Hine’s work centers on contemporary art and the evolving relationships between text\, image and media. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Jennifer Cohen is Director of Curatorial Affairs at The Dalí Museum. She holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Chicago\, and she was formerly Curator of Provenance and Research at the Art Institute of Chicago. Her exhibitions and publications have focused on Surrealism and its legacies. Some of her favorite projects include Salvador Dalí: The Image Disappears (2023) and c/o Tender Buttons (2021–22) at the Art Institute\, and Robert Motherwell and Multiplicity (2023) at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich\, CT. Her research has been supported by the Mellon–Council for European Studies\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, and the Dedalus Foundation. Her writing has appeared in The Brooklyn Rail\, the Journal of Surrealism and the Americas and numerous exhibition catalogs.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kimberly Macuare\, Director of Education and Co-Director of Innovation Labs at The Dalí\, is an experienced educator\, curriculum designer and facilitator. For over 20 years\, she has designed world-class learning experiences—college courses\, workshops\, leadership retreats\, team building sessions\, and keynote presentations—and\, most recently\, has been responsible for the award-winning curriculum of creativity and innovation workshops and offerings at The Innovation Labs at The Dalí. In her role at The Dalí\, she has helped a wide range of organizations build their innovation capacities by developing creativity-focused mindsets and learning key creative problem-solving skills. In addition to supporting external clients\, she also takes an active role in innovative projects and initiatives across The Dalí Museum organization and teaches a creativity course in the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida. Kim holds a BA in English from the University of Cincinnati\, an MA in English from The Ohio State University and a PhD in English with a specialization in medieval literature and economics from The Ohio State University.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kanika Tomalin is President and CEO of the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg where she works to create a community in which good health helps all people thrive. With visionary expertise\, she guides the Foundation’s critical work to fund\, lead\, partner and advocate for transformed conditions that advance equity and shape our community’s health.Dr. Tomalin currently serves on the boards of The Dali Museum\, Academy Prep St. Petersburg\, Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital Philanthropy Council\, Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation\, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital\, and the St. Petersburg Economic Development Corp. She has received numerous honors and appointments\, including being named: the ACLU’s Gardner Beckett Civil Liberties honoree; St. Petersburg Chamber’s Businesswoman of the Year\, inaugural “Iconic Woman to Watch” and Young Business Leader of the Year; YWCA of Tampa Bay’s Woman of Distinction; one of Tampa Bay Business & Wealth magazine’s Women Who Win; and one of Florida’s Most Powerful and Influential Women. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Zoe Anthony is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Tampa. Her research focuses on Nietzsche\, ethics\, political philosophy and the study of religion\, especially questions about suffering\, meaning\, morality and the formation of values. Her publications include “Art That Works: Nietzsche’s Figures of Suffering” and a forthcoming chapter on Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. She is currently completing a book manuscript titled Nietzsche and the Generativity of Suffering. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKai Tomalin is an adventurer\, folklorist and storyteller. His art blends magical realism with ancestral memory\, where each brushstroke echoes myth and the natural world. Each piece Kai creates plants a seed of wonder and memory. His work reminds us we are not just stewards of nature\, but co-authors of its story. He is a proud native of St. Petersburg\, graduate of the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago and The American University in Washington\, D.C. Mr. Tomalin is deeply committed to fostering peace and resolving conflicts through the use of creative expression and art\, a universal thread that ties all cultures together. He combines his degrees in International Studies and Arts Education at the intersection of art and activism to advocate for conservation\, cultural preservation and peace.

Individual books include Shimming the Glass House\, and a chapbook\, Pink Streets. A former Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg\, she is the curator of The Dalí Poetry series.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnid Shomer is the author of six books of poetry and three books of fiction. She also edited the popular anthology All We Know of Pleasure: Poetic Erotica by Women. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly\, The New Yorker\, Poetry\, The Paris Review\, The New Criterion and others. Among her many awards are the Iowa Fiction Prize\, Poetry’s Eunice Tietjens Prize\, two NEA fellowships in poetry and the gold medal in fiction from the Florida Book Awards. In 2012\, she received the Florida Lifetime Achievement Award in Writing. NPR named her novel The Twelve Rooms of the Nile one of the six best books of the year. Shomer’s tenth book\, Riptide: New and Selected Poems\, was published by Blair in June 2026. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Florida native\, Heather Sellers is the author of 12 books\, including five volumes of poetry. Her recent award-winning poetry collections are Field Notes from the Flood Zone (BOA Editions) and The Boys I Borrow (New Issues Press). Her new collection\, Women in Tampa Talking About Alligators\, features poems about daily life in suburban Florida in all its weird glory. Sellers’ memoir You Don’t Look Like Anyone I Know was an Oprah Magazine Book of the Month selection and an Editors’ Choice selection in The New York Times Book Review. Her short story collection Georgia Under Water won a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award. She has also authored four books on the craft of writing\, including Page after Page and The Practice of Creative Writing. Her essays have appeared in Good Housekeeping\, The Sun\, Parade\, Reader’s Digest\, The New York Times\, Redbook\, The Royal Society of Medicine Notes and Records and Best American Essays.

Her play\, Thrice To Mine (created at Hawthornden) premiered in 2019 at Bridge Street Theatre (New York). Roxanne regularly creates new works for The Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. Her first film\, Breton And The Muse: A Midnight In Paris\, was a focal point of The Dali’s acclaimed exhibition coordinated with Le Centre Pompidou (Paris) and was presented in multiple film festivals. As an actor\, Roxanne was honored with the 2022 Berkie Award (Berkshire Theatre Critics’ Association) for her portrayal of Mary Tyrone in Bridge Street Theatre’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night (New York) and she joined the 2022 season with the Prague Shakespeare Company in the Czech Republic.

Sami studied dance and psychology at the University of Florida\, with a strong focus on dance and mental health. \n\n\n\nSami has danced with Sarasota Contemporary Dance Ensemble and Phoenix Fire & Performance Art\, and works as a freelance performer and choreographer. She has performed the choreography of Bill T. Jones & Arnie Zane\, Rennie Harris\, Dante Puleio\, Leymis Bolaños Wilmott and Xiao-Xuan Yang Dancigers. Sami holds certifications in mat pilates\, yoga therapy\, the Functional Awareness method\, and Dance in Medicine. \n\n\n\nSami is a teaching artist at Project Alchemy Dance and teaches yoga\, pilates and dance to her local and online communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVictoria GonzalezVictoria Gonzalez is a contemporary dancer and choreographer who resides in Tampa and has performed in pieces by Jennifer Nugent\, Chris Aiken\, Angie Hauser\, and fellow emerging artists. Previously a member of the Venus Wheeler Dance Collective in Massachusetts for several years\, Victoria has a deep love for experimentation\, collaborative play\, improvisation\, and the endlessly engaging and winding process that is creating dance. Since receiving her BA in Dance from Smith College in 2017\, movement continues to be a home for Victoria– a place where she goes for freedom\, strength\, and community. Her dance pieces often blend abstraction with elements of the everyday to invite audiences to make their own connections and interpretations\, experiencing a natural\, free range of emotions. Incorporating elements of experimentation\, the ridiculous\, the “ugly”\, and multidisciplinary collaborations\, her dance works seek to push the boundaries of what is expected in dance\, in performance\, and in society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nprojectALCHEMY \n\n\n\nMomentum: Choreographic Mentorship is a five-month program for emerging artists\, both from within and outside of academia\, to create artistic works in the Tampa Bay Area. In El ángel exterminador\, Buñuel brings surrealist ideas shaped by his collaborations with Dalí into conversation with post-Revolutionary Mexican disillusionment. Previously a member of the Venus Wheeler Dance Collective in Massachusetts for several years\, Victoria has a deep love for experimentation\, collaborative play\, improvisation\, and the endlessly engaging and winding process that is creating dance. Since receiving her BA in Dance from Smith College in 2017\, movement continues to be a home for Victoria– a place where she goes for freedom\, strength\, and community. Her dance pieces often blend abstraction with elements of the everyday to invite audiences to make their own connections and interpretations\, experiencing a natural\, free range of emotions. Incorporating elements of experimentation\, the ridiculous\, the “ugly”\, and multidisciplinary collaborations\, her dance works seek to push the boundaries of what is expected in dance\, in performance\, and in society. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nprojectALCHEMY \n\n\n\nMomentum: Choreographic Mentorship is a five-month program for emerging artists\, both from within and outside of academia\, to create artistic works in the Tampa Bay Area. This mentorship offers budding artists the opportunity to receive creative\, financial\, and administrative support toward a fully produced two-night performance at The Dalí Museum.

Individual books include Shimming the Glass House\, and a chapbook\, Pink Streets. A former Poet Laureate of St. Petersburg\, she is the curator of The Dalí Poetry series.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCarolina Hospital’s most recent poetry collections are All Roads Lead to Here (Anhinga Press)and Bamboo Ghost Notes (Contagioso Press). Other poetry collections include Key West Nights and Other Aftershocks and The Child of Exile\, as well as Myth America and How to Get into Trouble\, collaborations with Maureen Seaton\, Holly Iglesias\, and Nicole Hospital-Medina. She published the novel A Little Love\, under the pen name C. C. Medina and collaborated on the bestselling novel Naked Came the Manatee. She also wrote the poetry used as lyrics to Greetings from Florida: Postcards from Paradise  by composer Scott Lee with jazz vocalist Camila Meza\, released as a CD by Sunnyside Records. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVirgil Suárez‘s poems address the morass of the times we live in and takes the reader under the top layer we are meant to accept as the convenient truth. He shows us the absurd\, interprets the “double speak\,” and does it with the voice and the eye of the artist. His subjeot matter has a wide range: George Santos\, gentrification\, a wayward spy balloon\, a classroom lockdown. And yet he can turn our attention away from the chaos and the surreal as he relates the hope he has for his granddaughter\, ” … who will remember the stories I whisper in her ears. Her poet grandfather reaching through the loam and dusk to spark her imagination into flourishing. ” – Misericordia Of Dust\, for Corazon\, my granddaughter. The poems in this collection are not meant to alarm with cries of “the sky is falling!”\, the poet knows we are way beyond that point\, but to illuminate the errors of our ways before the damage is beyond repair. These poems should be considered a warning to be shared and passed on to friends and strangers alike.
