“Psyched Out: Reinvented Myths”

June 12 – August 30, 2015

“Myths are works of art and like works of art their validity lies not in a simple factual truth but in their power to explain, to give form and meaning to human ideas and feelings.” Claude Levi-Strauss, anthropologist

About this year’s exhibit:
Surrealism drew on familiar myths as well as created new myths in order to understand the human psyche. Sigmund Freud, father of modern psychology and hero to Surrealists, saw ancient Greek and Roman myths as bearers of truth and a way to understand the mind. Salvador Dali often appropriated and transformed popular myths and stories as a way to explore and symbolize personal experiences (Narcissus, William Tell, Oedipus Rex). This year, we challenge students to explore the mythic in their everyday world, to recast something familiar into the mythic or to create a new myth entirely.
This year, we encourage students to look to any kind of “myth:” classical myths, legends, folk tales, children’s stories, religious stories, creation stories, paintings of myths (or making a painting mythic) and modern legends.

Students are welcome to explore a variety of media such as drawing, collage, watercolor, acrylic, digital photography, and mixed media. In order to accept as many works as possible, the exhibit restricts works to a finished 8”x10” size with no additional borders or mats. If accepted into the show, the Dali Museum frames the work.
