Junior Docent Summer Camp Program Returns for 2015 Season

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA (March 16, 2015) – The Dalí brings back its popular weeklong summer camp, the Junior Docent Program, offered to children ages 9-15, June through August. Campers make their own art through creative group projects and explore Salvador Dalí’s techniques where they learn to interpret his works and gain inspiration from Dali’s life and interests. At the conclusion of the week, students ‘graduate’ by providing a guided tour for their families and Museum guests followed by a private reception.

As part of the program, students build a foundation in art education by learning how to look at and talk about art through The Museum’s collection. The program is administered by award-winning visual arts teachers of Pinellas County, in tandem with The Dalí’s Education team. The program is not only fun, it ultimately benefits students by building self-esteem, enhancing their speaking skills, providing opportunities to verbalize personal choices and bringing families into the Museum to share in the students’ accomplishments.

The Dalí Museum completed a 7-year long study in collaboration with the USFSP Department of Psychiatry documenting how the program assists in the development of children’s self-esteem and ability to learn. An article on the study, written by Ryan Kaufman and Eric Rinehardt for the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association states, “This study provides preliminary evidence that art programs can be beneficial for the self-concept of children and draws implications for arts education and art therapy programming for diverse needs.”
