Year-end Conservation Appeal 2016

Tuesday, Nov. 01, 8am–Saturday, Dec. 31, 5pm
  • This event has passed.

Within the sweeping walls of The Dali Museum lives one of the most revered Salvador Dali collections in existence. Our commitment to share these works with audiences around the world comes with the significant responsibility to expertly maintain these precious pieces. These rare and distinguished artworks are continually evaluated to determine their preservation needs.

As we approach the end of the 2016 calendar year, we need your help in maintaining the integrity of our continuously aging collection. We are focusing our conservation efforts on two oil paintings from the 1930s – Fantasies Diurnes (1932) and Puzzle of Autumn (1935). These two beautiful works show weaknesses in both their support aspects and in their respective design layers.

In the case of Fantasies, planar distortions resulting from previous lining must be flattened and work is needed to even the tension on the canvas. Puzzle urgently needs attention to tend to patching and distortions from a brittle and worn canvas.  Both need cleaning, removal of old varnish, consolidation of lifting paint and other conservation efforts.

This conservation work is a vital part of the Museum’s mission: sharing an expertly curated collection of Salvador Dali works.  Without the necessary attention, important pieces within the collection are at risk of being retired to storage. Gifts of any amount are appreciated and all funds will go directly to The Dali Fund for Conservation and Care.

Please help save these precious works.
