Barbara Rose: The Odd Couple – Salvador Dali & Marcel Duchamp

Wednesday, Feb. 28, 6:30–7:45pm
  • This event has passed.

American Art Historian and Art Critic Barbara Rose has been part of the New York art world since the 1960s, writing eloquently on topics ranging from Minimalism to Neo-Dada to Art and Technology. Her articles have appeared in such journals as Art in America, Artforum, the Partisan Review and New York magazine.

This talk focuses on Dalí and Duchamp’s respective roles in defining the idea of the avant-garde. Rose knew them both, providing a unique perspective on The Dalí Museum exhibition. Rose will discuss their similarities and differences and the nature of their friendship. In 1970, Rose curated an exhibition at the Irvine Museum of UC Irvine, where she was the first Director, called “MARCEL DUCHAMP: CHOICE AND CHANCE.” It was one of the first multimedia shows ever done and included films, photographs, projections, and audience participation. She will talk about that show and its ramifications.

Rose also published “Rethinking Duchamp” in the Brooklyn Rail, a review of the 2014 Duchamp exhibit at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
